Chin Augmentation
Reshape & Refine
If you are bothered by the shape, size or prominence of your chin, chin augmentation surgery might be right for you. Chin augmentation surgery is designed to enlarge, augment or reshape the chin area. An implant is used to create balance and a more pleasing contour to the face.
The implants are usually made of a silicone compound. Prior to the surgery, the type, size, and method of placement of the implants will be discussed carefully with you and Dr. Mueller.
This procedure is frequently done in conjunction with a facelift or other facial surgery, or may be done alone.

What Happens During chin Augmentation Surgery?
Medications are administered for your comfort during chin augmentation surgery. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Mueller will recommend the best choice for you.
There are two common surgical methods by which the implants may be introduced into the face. Sometimes an intraoral method is used, in which an incision is made inside the mouth, between the gums and the lower lip. This is perhaps the most direct approach. However, usually an implant is placed through a crease immediately below the point of the chin. The best approach for your individual needs will be discussed in detail during pre-operative appointment.
Incisions typically are closed with removable or absorbable sutures.
The results will be long lasting. After the surgery there may be some elastic tape placed on the face to help hold the implant in place while it heals. It is helpful to use cold compresses for the few days immediately after the surgery to reduce swelling. During this time, there may be some discomfort which usually responds quite quickly to pain medication.
The swelling should begin to subside within three to five days along with the discomfort. It is not uncommon for there to be some temporary numbness in the lip or weakness of the smile. This is due to the body’s inflammatory response to any surgical operation and usually within one to three weeks both of these functions return to normal. It is expected that you will be presentable in approximately one week.
